Can I use a 17.5 HP engine for a generator?
Can I use a 17.5 HP engine for a homemade generator? Is that too much HP and somewhat pointless or will the generator be able to produce more power?
Thanks!
What alternator do I need?
After factoring in losses and so on, a good figure to use is 500 watts per horsepower. Your 17.5HP engine should be able to supply 8750 watts continuously. Depending on the alternator the surge rating could be much higher. The engine will need to operate at a constant speed. If it is directly connected, for the AC output to be 60Hz it must be either 1800RPM or 3600RPM, depending on the type of alternator. A belt or gear type drive would have to factor in pulley sizes as well.

How can I make my own generator?
I have built my own hovercraft with a leaf-blower, plywood, plastic bags, and a fan for direction. I want to power the leaf blower and fan without having to plug it in with really long extensions. I don’t want clutter. Generators are expensive too. The whole thing was for a science fair project so if you have a way to power the leaf-blower and fan, that would be great. Thanks.
I agree with the previous answer. Trouble is that you are adding a whole lot of mass to convert one form of energy into another. Besides adding mass that needs to be carried by your craft, you will have losses converting say the energy in gasoline to mechanical energy in a generator, then converting the mechanical energy to electricity, and the electricity back to mechanical energy to run the blower and fan.
I wouldnt expect much more than 30% efficiency out of that arrangement, maybe less.
Just go to a gas powered leaf blower and you should save all around.
The other option is to get a power inverter and convert battery power to AC current. Again, lack of efficiency and you will probably need a heavy car battery to provide the power, so back to the weight issue.
If you want to try the inverter and battery approach, you need to find out the current rating of your leaf blower and fan, and add the two together.
If the fan draws 3 amps and the Blower 8 amps, thats a total of 11 Amps.
To determine the required Power Inverter, you can get close enough by multiplying the Amps X Voltage. For example11 Amps X 115 Volts = 1265 Watts. You will probably need a 1500Watt Power Inverter.
The 12 Volt battery that you would need would require approximately a 125 AmpHour Rating to run the setup for an hour. You would need heavy gage wire between the Battery and the inverter to pass the 125 Amps of power.
In any case , thats how to figure it all out.
Either way, be careful, the gasoline is dangerous and so is the electricity!
good luck!

How can I make a diesel generator from an Engine?
One which can run 240v electrics, preferably 2 lights and maybe 1 item of high load (fridge). Only as an emergency measure. I have fair mechanical skill and the engine will be stationary mounted, I’d like to know what size of engine I’ll need ,how to do it and whether it’s feasible.
first of all your diesel engine must have a governor, this keeps your engine at a steady rpm when load is applied to it. then you have to pick out a generator, you have to know the volts and the amps that each item draws. generators are rated in watts which is volts x amp = watts. so take each appliance and find out how many watts each takes and then add them all together and you will have the total watts you will consume.always get a bigger generator than you think you need so you can add appliances later keep in mind that if you don’t run all at the same time your watt usage will be less. Now to mount the generator to the engine it will be easiest to use a belt driven generator,so you don’t have to line up perfectly with the out put shaft of the engine as you would if you directly mounted to the engine.
the generator needs to run at 60 cycles a second or you can do damage to your appliances. this is achieved by a constant rpm,for most small engine generators this is 3600 rpms your generator must be equipped with a meter that you can visually look at to set the rpms properly. when picking out pulleys you need to know what rpm you will run the engine at and ratio up or down, most likely up. most diesels run from 1200 to 3000 rpm.
when picking out a generator get one with a revolving field this type of generator is in for the long haul and will last. I hope this helps a little bit.

Would this be classified as free electricity?
Ok I was just thinking the other day and thought could I create free electricity? I came to this idea I need to know if it would be worth it. My plan is to take a 12v car battery connect it to a Inverter (takes 12v DC and turns it into 120V AC) and the inverter will have 3 electrical outlets I plan to connect a 12v battery charger to one plug to charge the battery so it doesn’t run dead using the inverter and the other two outlets would be used to power small things computers tvs ect. Would this work?
to go into specs I plan to use a Optimum battery the very good ones and a 5000 Watt inverter which can almost power a entire small home easily and a extremely fast battery charger.
no
each step you lose power. start out with 1000 watts from the battery, after the inverter you have 900. After the charger you have 800 watts. so the first time around you lose 20%, then another 20%, etc.
It’s perpetual motion and is against some of the most basic laws of physics.
analogy:
Start out with a £5 note. Go to a bank and change it for five £1 coins
(minus a service fee). Go to a different bank. Change your coins for a
£5 note, minus another service fee. Repeat until you have several
million pounds!
.
