What is the difference between a permanent magnet generator & a field excitation generator?

The field excitation generator needs a DC voltage through coils of wire to establish a magnetic field before the generator can produce an output.
A permanent magnet generator does not need a DC voltage to produce an output. The permanent magnet establishes the magnetic field.

Is it possible to have a generator to work with stationary coils and moving magnets.?
Me and a friend was wondering if it is indeed possible for a generator to work this way. We have been going back and forth if this would or wouldn’t work. The idea is this, make a generator with stationary coils. And instead of the coil moves, the magnets move around the coil.
There are no technical reasons why it cannot be done. However, if it was more efficient or had more output they’d be done that way already. If there was some sort of specialty application that required that design, though, you’d need to come up with it.
On the face of it, though, I’m thinking that you’d have more problems with hysteresis effects doing it that way, which would lower your efficiency and output compared to the standard designs.

What would you need to do to a brushless DC motor to turn it into a generator?
I am new to learning about generators and dont know much about DC electricity. I am experimenting with building a windmill for household power. Would machining the shaft and placing magnets in it work? I am first building one with homemade coils and earth magnets, but somebody suggested using a dc motor housing and thought i would check into it. Thanks for any input.
Hi,
First of all,a brushless DC motor needs an alternative arrangement that could cause the reversal of input direct current for developing a constant torque in armature.This may be achieved with the help of any electronic inverter connected to the input terminals of motor as the brushes in a dc motor actually act as mechanical inverter.
Now,to run a dc motor as generator:
Rotate the shaft of the motor by coupling it through any prime mover(such as engine or any other generator) at rated speed
The field excitation to the motor circuit must be provided using any dc source.Now,the motor runs as a generator.
Importantly,an arrangement(either an electronic rectifier or brushes) that could reverse the direction of induced current in the armature,which is of alternating nature,must be provided at the output.This is required so as to obtain dc power at load.

How does a gas generator make electricity?
Okay, I know there is a generator /electro motor in there, but it’s not a permanent magnet motor, then if there is no existing magnetic field, and there is no battery on a generator, how does it make the coils energized? The rotor and stator are both windings, or, is there a slight small magnet in the rotor to give that first bit of current to make more current as the generator gets to full speed?
You very astutely answered your own question. Generators self-excite with the residual magnetism in the rotor. In some cases, especially if the generator has been rebuilt, they may loose the residual magnetism and will fail to self-excite and generate. In this case, you must flash the field, which is accomplished by connecting a battery momentarily across the field coil to magnetize the field core.
